Making the Components of the Wine Barrel | |
Now the real fun begins! First we have to build the cherry barrel ends and then take it all apart and re-assemble it on the 'final product' to make sure all the attachments work.
To do that we have to glue-up three layers of cherry wood. Otherwise the doors, which will be cut from the barrel ends by the CNC machine, would warp. The square tubes are shop-made gluing jigs, which are very straight and allow the glued-up cherry to be straight as it must be!
After 'glue-up' the pieces are run through a 'jointer' to make them straight and square, then indexed as to the location where they will be used.
The panels are then routed for a double spline connector and laid out for glue-up.
Note the 'spline grooves' in the end panels. These will allow the 'sub-panels to be glued up into the complete product. After glue-up, the panels will be run through a drum sander to make them perfectly flat. They are then ready to be shipped to the CNC company for routing.
Note the staggered ends of the panel. This will be cut away to form the circular end panels of the barrel.
Carefully, loading the panels for shipment to the CNC company. |
